overview

Ensure optimal data security

Leverage tape cartridge portability to facilitate remote, offline data storage for superior protection from natural or man-made threats that can impact online or on-site data storage.

Increase efficiency and performance

Use the latest tape that your drive supports for significantly greater efficiency and performance, as well as reduced cartridge, equipment, space and labor requirements.

Enhance data access

Allow users and applications to directly retrieve files from tape rather than rely on third-party applications to enhance data access and potentially reduce software licensing costs and dependencies.

Key features

  • Tape cartridge portability
  • IBM Spectrum Archive support
  • Adherence to Linear Tape-Open Ultrium standard. All the IBM tapes comply with the standards.
  • Cartridge model and label options. Available in WORM ( starting LTO-3) and prelabelled

FAQ

What is the difference between Native and compressed capacity of LTO tapes?

Data to be written on the tape is compressed before its written. If the data is highly repetitive, it will have high compression ratio ( a Text file will be compressabile, a BMP image is highly compressible). But if the data is already compressed ( say you have tarred or Zipped the data already), it won't be further compressible.

For Data That's non compressed you will see capacity higher than the native capacity. For data that's already compressed you will capacity close to the native capacity.

TLDR : Native capacity is what is guaranteed. You might get Compressed capacity , ormore than the compressed capacity depending on how compressible your data is.

What is a typical Compression ratio ?

Upto LTO-5 the compression ratio was defined as 2:1. It assumed that 100GB data for example could be compressed to 50GB. From LTO-6 onwards the Compression ratio is defined as 2.5:1.

Compression ratio always depends on the data you are writing. A tar file can't be further compressed for example, whereas a file of repetitive data can be compressed beyond 3 or 4 times.

What is the meaning of Limited Lifetime Warranty ?

For the lifetime of the Media, its covered by warranty by manufacturer. Typically the useful lifetime of the media will be defined in years and number of read/write mounts. Refer to the vendor website for more details on warranty.

Can I use a newer LTO media in my old Tape drive ?

No, There is no forward Compatibility. Which means Your can't use LTO-9 media (when its launched) in your LTO-8 tape drive. To use LTO-9 Media you would have to upgrade your tape drive to LTO-9 tape drive.

Can I use my old Media in new tape drive ?

Yes, LTO Drive are backward compatible to 2 previous generations. Each New LTO tape drive is Read/Write compatible to previous generation and Read only Compatible to generation before that. For Exmaple LTO- 7 tape drive is RW compatible to LTO-6 and Read-Only LTO-5. This way you know that any old media you have ( upto 2 prior generations) is also compatible. The only Exception is LTO-8 Drive which is not compatible with LTO-6.

Can I use LTO-6 Tape Media in my LTO-8 drive ? Why is the LTO-8 drive not backward compatible to 2 previous Gens

LTO-8 tape drive is the only tape drive which is not comaptible with 2 previous generations. However it has a special functionality - it can format your LTO-7 Media as a 50% high capacity LTO-7 type M media

What is LTO-7 type M Media ?

LTO-8 tape drive can Format a previously unused LTO-7 media as LTO-7 type M media. The advantage is that instead of 6TB native capacity, it would yield 9TB compressed capacity. This media however is only writable in LTO-8 tape drive.

That's 50% more capacity for LTO-7 media at the same price.

Can you give me pre-labelled custom Labels for LTO tapes ?

Yes, we can provide you Custom Labels from Tri-Optics ( The world's largest and only IBM authroized Media Label). We can further offer you labels in series you want ( Say AUH001 to AUH100)

What is the difference between LTO tapes using Metal Particle (MP) and Barium Ferrite (BaFe) ?

All the older Generation LTO tapes use Metal Particle technology. This technology has limitations in how densly you can pack data on a single tape.
Starting LTO-6 , IBM shifted to BaFe. All the IBM Media after LTO-5 is offered only in BaFe.

HP LTO-5 tape says its 3TB, whereas IBM tape says its 1.5TB. What's the difference ?

HP states the compressed capacity and IBM states the native capacity. Both HP and IBM tapes are identical - both are 1.5/3.0TB . its just the way they are marketed that makes them look different.

What is the difference between 5 pack and single pack ?

Technically they are exactly the same. 5 pack is a multipack which comparises of 5 units of retail tapes. There is no price advantage though in buying a 5 pack.
